JetBlue Airways will celebrate its 25th anniversary today, February 11. The carrier unveiled a new “BlueUnity” livery on an Airbus A321 that honors its 23,000 employees by representing their likenesses, underscored by the tagline “Honoring the fly-est crew in the biz.”
As part of the celebration, JetBlue will recreate its first flight, which was from New York City to Fort Lauderdale, using the BlueUnity Airbus plane.
“Our mission of bringing humanity back to air travel has set us apart, and our amazing crewmembers are redefining what it means to truly care for our customers and each other,” said JetBlue CEO Joanna Geraghty in a statement. Geraghty is the first woman to lead a major U.S. airline.
JetBlue, which was founded in 1998 by David Neeleman as “NewAir.” Neeleman and his co-founders had planned to call the airline “Taxi” and use a yellow livery to associate the airline with one of the Big Apple’s most recognizable symbols, its yellow taxicabs. They were forced to drop the idea after investor JP Morgan threatened to pull its $40 million investment in the airline unless the name “Taxi” was abandoned.
The New York City-based carrier currently operates over 1,000 flights daily, serving some 100 domestic and international destinations in the Americas and Europe. Its primary hub, Terminal 5 at John F. Kennedy International Airport, opened in 2008 at a cost of $800 million.
